CASTRO VALLEY, CA — The Lake Chabot Public Market in Castro Valley was gutted by a 3-alarm fire Thursday that sent flames soaring high into the pre-dawn sky. No injuries were reported. At 6:30 p.m. Thursday the cause is still under investigation.

"ACFD first reported that Chabot Elementary School officials decided to have children and staff shelter in place until all the hot spots were out," Alameda County Fire Department spokesperson Cheryl Hurd reports. "Later this morning, school officials decided to cancel classes because of road closures."

The fire department was notified about the blaze at 2:30 a.m. The fire advanced almost immediately to a second alarm, and then to 3-alarms at 3:36.

The market is located on 18911 Lake Chabot Road. It housed about half a dozen small businesses including restaurants, a meat market and coffee shops.

The fire did not spread to neighboring buildings.
