Star Student Overcomes Physical Challenge: Excels In Academics, Clubs
Miia was in a back brace 24 hours a day for 6 years.

CASTRO VALLEY, CA — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.
Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.
This submission comes from Rita Loera who nominated Miia of Castro Valley.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?
Miia is a senior at Hayward High with many challenges in life facing scoliosis from a very young age — was on a back brace for almost 6 years, being bullied at school and finally got off of it last year and after that she immediately joined softball. She was never able to do any sport or activities due to being braced for 24 hours 7 days a week. And today she is involved in Linq crew helping freshmen throughout the year helping them feel welcome into a new school. She is in many clubs at Hayward. She does Softball, Color guard (well now its winter guard). Made it to honor roll! Has done all this going thru physical therapy and doctors appointments. Involved in many activities till 6 pm. She’s a heck of a strong young girl — I truly admire her strength!
