1 Dead Near Concord In Highway 4 Crash

An arrest was made in the fatal wreck near Willow Pass Road.

CONCORD, CA β€” A 46-year-old Antioch man has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony driving under the influence after a crash that left one person dead and another injured on eastbound state Highway 4 in Concord on Sunday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Willie Hamlin was arrested after the crash reported at 9:28 p.m. Sunday at eastbound Highway 4 at Willow Pass Road that killed 19-year-old Antioch resident Giovanni Vasquez, CHP officials said.

According to an initial investigation, Hamlin was speeding east on the highway in a Chevrolet Chevelle when he veered to the right and struck the metal guardrail, then veered back into lanes of traffic and hit a Nissan sedan, according to the CHP.

The Chevrolet continued across lanes and broadsided a Mitsubishi Lancer in the far left lane, killing Vasquez. The 44-year-old Nissan driver suffered only minor injuries in the collision and was able to walk away from it, CHP officials said.

Hamlin suffered injuries considered major but not life-threatening. He was taken to John Muir Medical Center and was determined to be under the influence.

CHP officers placed him under arrest at the hospital and he will be booked into county jail after being medically cleared.
