Driver Charged In Crash That Killed 9-Year-Old Girl: DA

The 22-year-old from Oregon is accused of running away from the fatal crash that happened on I-680 in Concord near the Highway 242 split.

CONCORD, CA β€” A 22-year-old man from Oregon has been charged by the Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office with a two-count felony complaint centering on a deadly crash early Sunday in Concord, the DA's Office announced in a news release late Friday afternoon.

Jesus Ivan Dorantes Guzman faces charges of a felony hit-and-run that resulted in the death or serious injury of another. He is also charged with child abuse for putting a minor in a situation that caused her death, DA's Office Spokesperson Ted Asregadoo said. The child abuse charge comes with a special allegation of great bodily injury.

Shortly before 5:15 a.m. Sunday, April 7, Dorantes Guzman was driving a Mazda SUV with multiple passengers when he crashed on northbound Interstate 680 at state Highway 242 in Concord. The SUV overturned in a dirt area near the freeway.

The crash injured five people, three of whom were minors.

The California Highway Patrol said multiple people were ejected from the car and most were not properly restrained in seat belts.

Nine-year-old Danna Hernandez Tapia of Tualatin, Oregon, died at the scene of the crash.

"Dorantes Guzman fled the scene on foot after the crash," Contra Costa DA's Office Spokesperson Asregadoo said. "Days later, he was found by police officers in the City of Williams – which is in Colusa County."

Dorantes Guzman was being held Friday in lieu of $1 million bail at the Martinez Detention Facility. His arraignment is set for Monday afternoon.
