Firefighters arrived to find the home engulfed in flames with power lines that had dropped into the front yard, Fire Marshal Robert Marshall said. The gas meter at the home had also caught fire, further complicating firefighting efforts, Marshall said.

Fire crews were able to knock down the main portion of the fire within about 25 minutes and extinguished all of the flames within an hour, he said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

An eviction had recently taken place at the home so no one was supposed to be living there, but fire officials learned a number of squatters had apparently been living there, according to Marshall.

The house is β€œa total loss,” Marshall said, adding that no adjacent homes were damaged by the fire.
