FREMONT, CA — 118 Fremont students were named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced Wednesday. 105 students attend Fremont Unified School District high schools while the remaining students attend other schools or are homeschooled.
According to district spokesperson Laura Forrest, the City of Fremont is in the top three California cities in terms of total semifinalists for the third year in a row. Fremont is the 16th most populous city in the state but only trails San Diego and San Jose, the second- and third-most populous cities in California.
"I congratulate each student named as a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist, along with the proud families and educators who stand behind them," said FUSD Superintendent CJ Cammack. "The consistently high number of Fremont Unified students recognized as semifinalists is a strong indicator of our students’ dedication to academic excellence, and underscores the strength of our district’s educators and schools."

The students join more than 16,000 students in the running to receive scholarships to help them further their education.
To become a finalist, semifinalists must submit a detailed application that provides information on their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. They must also write an essay, be recommended by a high school official, and receive SAT or ACT scores high enough to qualify.
About 95 percent of semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and approximately half of finalists are expected to win a National Merit Scholarship, according to the NMSC.
