The Tesla plant is located at 45500 Fremont Blvd. The company calls the plant Tesla's hub for Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y production.

For years, it was the only Tesla assembly plant in the world. Now, vehicles are also built at a plant in Austin, and overseas in China and Germany. Other Tesla plants build components, notably electric batteries.

The Fremont facility has been hit by layoffs with more expected in June, according to state WARN notifications. At its height, the plant had 22,000 workers.

Just a year ago, Tesla controlled 61-percent of the electric vehicle market, according to Kelley Blue Book. But that fell to 51-percent the first quarter of this year.

The company is Fremont's largest employer. In addition to the plant, Tesla office workers fill several buildings.
