FREMONT, CA — Bay Area residents should carefully eye $100 bills after the Fremont Police Department reports that counterfeit bills were passed at local businesses. Four people were arrested — three San Jose residents and one from Fremont. One of the accused had an outstanding warrant for making phony money.

Police were alerted to the problem on May 14 when a store manager on Warm Springs Boulevard in Fremont reported two separate incidents of suspects passing counterfeit US currency.

The first happened on May 11 and the second on May 13.

The counterfeit money was discovered after it went through a counting machine.

Store surveillance cameras caught images of the suspect and the suspect vehicle. Unfortunately, a license plate was not visible. Police then turned to community cameras to obtain the license plate of the suspect vehicle.

Police investigators believed the suspects were passing counterfeit bills in nearby shopping areas, so they conducted focused area checks looking for the suspect vehicle.

On May 19, officers located the vehicle in front of a store on the 46400 block of Mission Blvd.

Officers detained the two occupants in the suspect vehicle.

Two suspects were detained when they exited the store after passing counterfeit currency, police said.

"The suspects were found to be in possession of counterfeit US currency," police said. "One of the suspects also had an outstanding arrest warrant for making counterfeit currency."

The suspects were arrested on suspicion of multiple crimes:

  • Daniel Gonzalez (41 years old, resident of San Jose)
  • Ricardo Cuevas (25 years old, resident of San Jose)
  • Isabel Siqueiros (27 years old, resident of San Jose)
  • Claudia Siqueiros (33 years old, out of Fremont)

Call police if you spot suspicious activity or think you may have been a victim.
