FREMONT, CA — Erik Burmeister resigned Wednesday, effective immediately, from his position as superintendent of Fremont Unified School District.

Burmeister was hired last year and started with the district on July 1. At the time, Board President Yajing Zhang wrote, "Mr. Burmeister brings a wealth of experience in educational leadership, and a proven record of success in navigating times of challenge and opportunities through a thoughtful and systematic approach to managing change, and a commitment to providing learners with transformative educational opportunities. The Board believes Mr. Burmeister is the best choice to continue our district’s mission to educate, challenge and inspire all students."

In announcing Burmeister's resignation, the district did not give a reason for the abrupt departure. That has given rise to speculation among Fremont parents, who are discussing the situation on social media.

Patch reached out to district spokesperson Anh Pham for clarification. Pham cited the confidentiality of personnel matters, and instead redirected attention toward selecting Burmeister's successor.

Current Board president Larry Sweeney said, "As the Board navigates the short- and long-term challenges that are inherent in a district of our size and accomplishments, we are committed to continuing to provide the very best educational experience for our students, employees, families, and community."

The district has created a landing page where staff will provide ongoing updates on new developments. It currently has a letter to parents about the resignation and a link to a press release.

The Fremont Unified School District operates 41 schools, serving over 32,000 students in transitional kindergarten through grade 12. The district's high standards are a source of community pride. Fremont currently has 118 students who are National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists, a national Blue Ribbon school, and district students who, on the whole, outperform Alameda County and the State of California averages on standardized tests.
