FREMONT, CA -- South Korean grocery chain Mega Mart is opening a location in Fremont this week, according to a Bay Area News Group report.

The store, located in central Fremont at 3900 Mowry Ave., is the grocer's third U.S. store, company officials told BANG. The others are located in Sunnyvale and Duluth, Georgia. The Sunnyvale store is operated under the name The K Market.

The new store is scheduled for a Sept. 23 opening. The site was previously occupied by Sprouts Farmers Market and before that, was the home of Barnes & Noble Booksellers for many years. The Fremont space is an estimated 27,000 square feet, according to news reports.

According to U.S. Census Bureau data, roughly 60% of Fremont's residents identify as having some Asian ancestry, but only a small percentage of those identify as being of Korean descent.

"The Mega Mart brand and subsidiaries are owned by parent company Nongshim, a food and drink maker and wholesaler that produces many popular instant noodle dishes. The company has more than 15 stores, a shopping mall and other businesses in (South) Korea," the Bay Area News Group reported.
