Nat'l Merit Scholarships Awarded To 10 Fremont Students

FREMONT, CA — Ten Fremont high school seniors were awarded National Merit Scholarships financed by colleges or universities, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced Tuesday.

The awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship. The exact award for each student was not disclosed.

The Fremont winners are —

• Claire R. McGuire | Probable career field: Mathematics | Homeschooled | Oberlin College
• Tarakanath Peddi | Probable career field: Computer Engineering | Mission San Jose High School | Purdue University
• Shreyas Rathi | Probable career field: Economics | Mission San Jose High School | University of Southern California
• Hayaan I. Rizvi | Probable career field: Biochemistry | Rise Academy in San Jose | Texas A&M University
• Aditya Seetharaman | Probable career field: Biology | American High School | University of Southern California
• Nessya G. Shapiro | Probable career field: Astronautics | American High School | Texas Tech University
• Shubha Vajragiri | Probable career field: Business | Irvington High School | University of Southern California
• Kevin Xu | Probable career field: Computer Science | Mission San Jose High School | University of Maryland

One final group of scholarships for this year will be announced next month.

For 2024, 149 higher education institutions are underwriting awards through the National Merit Scholarship Program.

This year's total awards of $26 million are going to more than 6,870 students.
