Suspect Charged With Hate Crime At East Bay BART Station

Alameda County prosecutors have filed charges against a man at an East Bay BART station.

FREMONT, CA — Prosecutors in Alameda County filed charges against a man accused of a hate crime at a BART station, the District Attorney's Office said Monday.

Michael Sprague, 45, allegedly brandished a weapon at a BART rider waiting for a train in Fremont on Thursday and told the person to "go back to your country."

The complaint against Sprague contains a hate crime enhancement, alleging that he committed the crime because of the victim's "actual characteristics and perceived characteristics with respect to race and ethnicity" and he allegedly did so in a "rude, angry, or threatening manner."
