Young Girl Drowns In Fremont Creek
As officials release information about the drowning, they also issue a warning about swimming as a heat wave intensifies.

ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA — An 11-year-old girl, Dana Nino Gonzalez, drowned in Alameda Creek in Fremont on Memorial Day, the Alameda County Sheriff's Office reported on Tuesday. The child got stuck against a flow control structure.
Bystanders, Fremont Police officers and finally, Fremont firefighters all worked to pull Dana from the water. Despite lifesaving measures at the creek and at nearby Washington Hospital, the child died.
"This tragedy saddens us," the sheriff's office said in a statement. "We'd like to remind you of some safety measures to follow as you enjoy warm-weather activities near waterways. Adhere to posted warning/caution signs, make a safety plan, wear safety equipment such as a life jacket, never swim alone, and avoid getting in the water if you cannot swim or are unfamiliar with weather and water conditions."
According to the sheriff's office, the Fremont Police Department, the East Bay Regional Parks District Police Department, and the Alameda County Sheriff's Office have jurisdictions along Alameda Creek. The drowning occurred in ACSO's jurisdiction, so that agency has assumed responsibility for the investigation.
"We want to thank the community members involved, the Fremont Police Department, the Fremont Fire Department, Falck, and the Washington Hospital Healthcare System staff for their efforts to save Dana's life."
