Air over Healdsburg:

Here are the top 3 stories in Healdsburg today:
- Despite a petition with 600-plus signatures calling for more public arts funding in Healdsburg, the City Council went ahead with a $50,000 allocation to the arts when they approved the city budget at their regular meeting Monday, according to the Healdsburg Tribune. "The council heard public comment from half a dozen residents, including several members of the city’s own Creative Leadership Team, about the importance of arts funding for the public image of Healdsburg and in support of the petition circulated by [Stafford Gallery owner] Christina Stafford on Change.org," the Tribune reports. The petition claims that throwing a mere $50,000 at "this vital programming is simply insufficient to launch the Arts and Culture Master Plan" approved last year, and blames city staff for not prioritizing it. City Manager Jeff Kay explains his side to the Trib, saying there were other community services in dire need of funding, too. Anyway — next steps for the council will reportedly be to "take up the matter at the next available city council meeting — sometime in August, following final budget meetings and the July recess." And Stafford will be right there waiting. "“We’re here, and we’re a pretty vocal and enthusiastic group," she says. (Healdsburg Tribune & Change.org)
- One of the Healdsburg Police Department's friendliest faces, parking enforcement officer Barry Comerford, has passed away, according to the Healdsburg Police Officers' Association. In his five years at the department, he "was always someone who brought a smile to everyone’s face," the association says. Barry was also apparently a youth soccer coach in Santa Rosa, where one of his colleagues says his cause of death was cancer. In the comments on the police association's post, neighbors have added tributes to Barry. He was "the sweetest guy," one says. "He would always stop and chat with me every time I saw him downtown." Another adds: "He said he really didn't like having to give out tickets. Barry always had a beautiful smile on his face and he was such a friendly man." And another: "Barry was the best. What a great conversationalist. My condolences to his wife, children and step children." May he rest in peace. (Healdsburg Police Officers' Association via Facebook & Mark Marcarian via Facebook)
- Another public servant for Healdsburg, volunteer firefighter Danny Dee "Dan the Barber" Rogers, passed away recently as well. "Dan was a barber for more than 50 years and barbering in Windsor for over 25 years until his retirement in 2017 and was loved by all who knew him," his obituary says. "Dan and Jeannie Rogers just made it to their 65th wedding anniversary March 2, 2022. He was an avid Nascar, Giants, and 49'er fan and an avid bowler." His family tells the public that "in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to [the] Healdsburg Fire Department Firefighters Association, where Dan was a long-time volunteer when [he] lived in Healdsburg." From my notebook:
- In my blurb yesterday on the new foodie hotel coming to north Healdsburg, I misspelled the name of the hotel. It should have been "Appellation." Oops! Thanks to reader Tracy Logan for pointing it out. (Healdsburg Patch & Facebook Groups)
- There are two big features in today's Trib on a couple of local institutions and what they've been up to lately: the Healdsburg Center for the Arts and the Healdsburg Farmers Market. (Healdsburg Tribune & Healdsburg Tribune)
- And speaking of the farmers market — organizers need someone to help set up the "No Parking" signs in their parking lot at North and Vine from here on out, because "Anke, our wonderful market assistant, is moving out of the area." More details on the gig: "They have to be set up Thursday or before 7am on Friday morning. ... We're looking for a strong person who would be willing to do this once a week. It will take 15 minutes and we'll pay $20 in market bucks." (Healdsburg Farmers' Market via Facebook)
- Healdsburg's newly re-elected state senator, Mike McGuire, hosted a town hall last night on "wildfire prevention and preparedness." You can rewatch it here. (YouTube & Press Democrat; paywall)
- And our newly re-elected county supervisor, James Gore of Healdsburg, was shadowed by the Press Democrat as he won his third term this week. “It’s different than eight years ago or even four years ago when we were in the middle of fires,” he says. “Our community has been through so much together and there’s so much more to do." Read all about his future plans in the PD. (Press Democrat; paywall)
- The Healdsburg Museum just hired a new museum manager. Her name is Ramona Adai, and she reportedly "has a B.A. in Anthropology and experience in office management and hospitality that we already appreciate at the Museum." (Healdsburg Museum via Facebook)
- There's gonna be a screening of the new Jurassic World tomorrow in the Historic Rio Theater over in Monte Rio. (Healdsburg Patch Calendar)
