Here are the top 3 stories in Healdsburg today:
- There are a few intriguing items on the the agenda for the Healdsburg City Council meeting tonight. They include the big annual update on our water supply; the latest on the semi-controversial new Verizon tower proposed near the golf course; news on the Villa Chanticleer's transition to a new operator; a discussion about the options for filling the City Council seat left open by Skylaer Palacios; a review of the Saggio Hills project, Mill District project and North Village project, and whether they're doing what they said they would do in their "development agreements"; some road repair stuff; some waterline extension project stuff; and a bunch of other stuff! - There was a dramatic car chase in the wee hours Friday just south of Healdsburg, involving two guys who got pulled over and then allegedly rammed into a Windsor police car — almost hitting the officer who pulled them over. From the police report: "The deputy radioed for assistance and pursued the suspect vehicle onto southbound Old Redwood Highway, reaching speeds of 80 MPH. The suspect and passenger continued driving eastbound onto East Shiloh Road, where their car stopped at the closed gate of the Shiloh Ridge Estate gated community. Additional deputies arrived to assist as the suspect vehicle attempted a U-turn maneuver at the closed gate. The suspect's vehicle became stuck in the landscaping rock, and both occupants fled their car on foot. The two suspects were apprehended after a brief foot chase." The two suspects, 29-year-old Carlos Gutierres and 25-year-old Nelson Rivera-Ajca of San Francisco, have since been arrested for a slew of charges including "assault with a deadly weapon, evading a peace officer," grand theft, burglary, conspiracy and more. - The Press Democrat has a great story on the Association of African American Vintners, founded exactly 20 years ago in Healdsburg "so Black vintners wouldn’t be invisible in the wine industry." The org, which reportedly began with just "a trickle of wineries," now has around 200 members. A co-founder explains that their initial focus was on "how to make wine, how to market it and understanding costs" — and that they've since been "able to move everyone forward in the industry by sharing our experiences, especially things we learned from mentors." They'll be holding a 20th anniversary fundraising dinner this Saturday night at DeLoach Vineyards in Santa Rosa, including an awards ceremony to recognize "trailblazers in the categories of education, legacy and unity." And looking forward, another co-founder explains his vision: “Why does the bowl of jelly beans representing the people who grow, produce, sell and educate about wine look nothing like the consumer bowl? I want those bowls to look the same, reflecting the entire color spectrum.” (Press Democrat; paywall)
