Here are the top 3 stories today in Healdsburg:
- Now that we've passed the deadline for Healdsburg City Council hopefuls to throw their names in the hat, we've got our official list of City Council candidates for the ballot this fall, courtesy of current councilmember David Hagele! There are two four-year seats and one two-year seat up for grabs. In the running for the four-year term are Evelyn Mitchell, also a current councilmember; local musician and Parks & Rec commissioner Chris Herrod; health coach Linda Cade; and Susan Graf, owner of the Susan Graf Limited women's clothing store at the southwest corner of the plaza. You'll be able to vote for two of them. And in the running for the two-year term are prominent local activist and former councilmember Brigette Mansell; Ron Edwards, retired owner of a local catering company; and 23-year-old graduate student Matias Lopez. You'll be able to vote for one of them. You can find more information on all the candidates in the Trib. (David Hagele via Facebook & Healdsburg Tribune)
- Sad news from the owners of the Stafford Gallery right off the plaza: They've decided to close their doors. "After months of soul-searching and contemplation, I have come to the decision to close Stafford Gallery in Healdsburg," Christina Stafford wrote on Facebook last week. "This small and mighty city, this community, means the world to me. I simply cannot express how grateful I am to each and everyone of you fabulous people who have made my life here the BEST EVER. There are a few things we do know: I will always come back. I will continue to represent my artists and share the incredible gift of art and creativity they put into this world, making it all the better. And, I love you. Thank you for some of the very best years of my life." She didn't give an official closing date, but she did say the store is having a big sale with "10-30% off all in-store inventory" through next Thursday, Aug. 25. (Facebook Groups)
- In a preview of the upcoming football season for the Healdsburg High School Greyhounds, the Press Democrat says "the time is now to show how much they’ve improved, and whether or not they can hang with the rest of the NBL-Redwood" league. Under a brand-new coach last season, they had some wins but fell behind and reportedly missed the playoffs. But there's hope this season, the PD writes, because the "Greyhounds are known for their speed, and this team fits that bill to a T." More from the preview: “'First and foremost, I don’t think there’s anyone as fast as us,' Second-year head coach Robert 'Bear' Gray said. 'And there’s a lot of fast kids in this league.' That belief starts with the senior duo of RB Cameron Pippi and QB Jeremiah Michener. Both are shifty runners who have top-end speed in the open field. 'They bring quickness, organization and smartness,' Gray said of Pippi and Michener. Another area Gray is super excited about is the offensive line, led by the trio of senior Logan Cardona, senior Eddy Silva and junior Alexis Gonzalez. 'First of all, they’re older and more mature,' Gray said of his boys in the trenches. 'They got football knowledge now; before they didn’t have it. They’re more disciplined, and our line is our strongest point.'" They'll play their first game versus Fort Bragg on Aug. 26 at Rec Park. (Press Democrat; paywall)

From my notebook:
- Someone recently stole the adorable "sign of a cat eating ramen" outside the Taste of Tea restaurant on the plaza. The owner uploaded video to Facebook of the wee-hour theft, saying: "We're hoping that our kitty will find her way home, please dm if you have any information on her whereabouts." (Facebook Groups)

(Healdsburg Fire Department via Facebook)
- Little Saint, the new food and event space on North Street — which has been pretty universally fawned over, til now — just got a pretty brutal review from the San Francisco Chronicle. "Michelin cred and bold vegan vision fail to inspire at SingleThread spin-off," reads the title of the piece by food critic Soleil Ho. For example, she compares the flavors on the menu to "loading activated cashews into a shotgun." Ouch... (SFist & SF Chronicle; paywall)
- School started yesterday for the children of Healdsburg! "Make sure to use caution around school buses and school zones," local police say. "Be sure to slow down and give yourself extra time for your morning commute. When the stop signals are activated it is a traffic violation to go around them." (Healdsburg Police Department via Facebook)
