Here are the top 3 stories in Healdsburg today:
- Mayor Ozzy Jimenez' decision not to run again for a seat on the Healdsburg City Council this fall means that the application deadline for other people who want to run has been extended from today to Aug. 17, according to the Healdsburg Tribune. "With Evelyn Mitchell the only incumbent running, one four-year seat is wide open — and even Mitchell will be only one of a handful of candidates on the ballot, the top two of which win council seats," the Trib reports. "Several candidates have begun the filing process, said City Clerk Raina Allen, though the final number of candidates — and whether or not they will be running for the two open 4-year seats or the single 2-year seat on the ballot — won’t be known until late next week." So far, these are the three locals who've announced they'll be running, aside from Evelyn: local musician and Parks & Rec commissioner Chris Herrod; well-known activist and former councilmember Brigette Ann Munsell; and health coach Linda Cade. Local journalist Matt Villano was also planning to run, but the Trib reports that he "said the cost of application and campaigning was too high, and withdrew. Villano complained on Facebook that the application fee alone was over $850, and including costs for mailing lists, posters and fliers would add several thousand dollars to mount a credible campaign for office." Anyway, if you've got the funds and you'd like to join the list of hopefuls, you can apply on the city's website for another five days. (Healdsburg Tribune & City of Healdsburg)
- Speaking of the Healdsburg Tribune! The newest iteration of the paper, run by Weeklys publisher Dan Pulcrano, is seeking donations to hire a local reporter. In an email sent out to the Tribune's old listserv, the paper's new "director of strategic initiatives" writes: "Weeklys, a Bay Area-based publisher that has operated the Bohemian in Sonoma County for 28 years, purchased The Tribune in April after we heard it had been shut down. As our CEO and executive editor Dan Pulcrano said, 'We didn’t want to see a treasured newspaper lost.' And we mean it. Local news is so important, and having a voice is a crucial part of community life. We’re going to keep that voice going for all of Healdsburg. We can’t allow a community like Healdsburg to become a news desert. But we need your help. When The Tribune was planning to shut down, the entire staff was laid off. So our first goal, right now, is to hire a reporter. Keeping up with local government is important. As a member-supported newsroom, we rely on the support of our readers to grow — like hiring a new reporter. You can support The Tribune and its goal of hiring a reporter by making a gift of any amount. Every donation makes a difference. The Healdsburg Tribune has been around since 1888. Let’s keep it going, together." (Inbox & Healdsburg Tribune Donation Hub)
- The owners of Oakville Grocery off the plaza downtown just opened a new wine shop next door called the Oakville Wine Merchant. In stock are 40 different wines "showcasing a robust collection of Sonoma County’s finest wines from acclaimed producers, including Sonoma’s cult producers to local favorites and pioneering producers," their press release says. Some also come from Napa and the Burgandy and Champagne regions of France. The wines are all part of a curated selection called the "Boisset Collection" — described in the press release as a "family-owned collection of historic and unique wineries bound together by a common cause: authentic, terroir-driven wines in harmony with their history, their future and the land and people essential to their existence." Oakville Wine Merchant reportedly held its grand opening ceremony last night, tricked out with — of course — "a selection of Boisset Collection wines alongside an assortment of cheese, charcuterie and pizzas from the Oakville Grocery will be served throughout the evening." - The big Healdsburg Arts Festival in the plaza is coming up in a couple of weeks, from Aug. 26-8! And the Healdsburg Center for the Arts, who's running it, says they're in "urgent need" of volunteers to help set up, greet people, man stations, lead workshops, clean up and more. Here's where you can sign up. (SignUp.com & Healdsburg Center for the Arts via Facebook)

- A whopping $240,000-plus was raised for the Humane Society of Sonoma County, which runs the Healdsburg animal shelter, at a very fancy-looking winery fundraiser last week. (Press Democrat; paywall)

- Healdsburg Museum officials say an "enthusiastic crowd of seventy people" attended the talk on "some of Healdsburg's great lost buildings" at the library last night. (Healdsburg Museum via Facebook)
- Related: The museum's new “Stories Behind the Structures" exhibit is in full swing. Check out the review in the Trib. There's also a supplemental "Historic Homes Walking Tour" coming up later this month on the morning of Saturday, Aug. 27. It reportedly "introduces locals to 12 historic commercial buildings located within 3 blocks of the Plaza." (Healdsburg Tribune)
- In more old-building news! There's a super charming "Queen Anne-style Victorian cottage" for sale at 226 Center Street, right across from Barndiva and next door to what used to be the Healdsburg Tribune offices. It's listed at $1.35 million. I randomly wandered inside last weekend and was freaking out over all the original fixings — cool old light switches, trim, windows, etc. You might go check it out if you're into that kinda thing.
