  1. The Healdsburg City Council will be one member short — with only four out of five seats filled — until residents elect a replacement for recently departed councilmember Skylaer Palacios in November. This is because the now-four-member council was split in a 2-2 vote at last night's meeting on whether they should appoint someone to replace Skylaer in the months until then — meaning no action will be taken. And in Vice Mayor Ariel Kelley's opinion, that's exactly why a four-member council might be dangerously ineffective. "I remain concerned," she writes on Facebook, "about recusal votes when one or more members of the council have to recuse on an item (such as everything that happens in the downtown plaza due to a council member owning a business on the plaza, or items related to Montage and Saggio Hills development due to a council member living within 500 feet of the Saggio site.) This will lead to only two council members available to vote on an item, or with no tie breaking vote, contentious items would be decided by two people only, which leads to 'no action' by the council." Anyway, we'll now be electing a total of three local representatives via the Nov. 8 municipal ballot — a couple with four-year terms, replacing Evelyn Mitchell and Ozzy Jimenez, and one to serve out Skylaer's remaining two years. 2. Construction workers have officially broken ground on the new 9.6-acre, $500 million Mill District neighborhood next to the Healdsburg roundabout, Real Estate Weekly reports. More than half of the homes within the district have already been sold, according to the report. The project's director, David Hill, says: "After years of design and approvals, we are now moving trailers and heavy equipment onsite and preparing for construction. In the next few weeks, we will start the excavation for the underground parking for our first residences, and once they get started, Mill District is going to rise quickly.” More from the report: "In the meantime, other workers will complete the removal of the last of the structures remaining from the original mill, including the drying kiln that has been used in recent years for community and charity fundraisers, cycling events, concerts and art installations. 'The old lumber buildings on the Mill District site have served as community gathering spaces while we have been preparing for this day. While it is sad to see them go, we are very proud to have shared this with several different organizations in Healdsburg and have been part of raising over a million dollars for local charities,' Hill said." 3. The new season of Healdsburg's most beloved local tradition, Tuesdays in the Plaza, begins exactly two weeks from now. "We hope you are excited for a FULL summer of music featuring a variety of talented artists each week between May 31-August 30, 2022, from 6:00-8:00 p.m in the Plaza," organizers say. They haven't finalized the lineup of bands yet, but I'll share it with y'all as soon as they do. More from the city: "Expect another fantastic collection of high-caliber musical artists and local cuisine from Lola's Market, Rose's Burgers & Brats, Sangsan Healdsburg, Healdsburg Bagel, Inc., Healdsburger, and The Wurst! Free Valet Bicycle Parking provided by the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition. Thank you again for your patience as we put the final touches on crafting the best music series in Sonoma County!" Are you a Healdsburg resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)

To learn more, visit Masterworks.io, where Healdsburg Daily readers can skip the waitlist.

Healdsburg pics of the day:

Local photographer Christopher Bingham took these pics last month of vine stakes being installed at Hafner Vineyard in Healdsburg's Alexander Valley. "Before the new grapes are planted, the trellis system and irrigation lines need to be completed," he writes. "These stakes are the foundation of the trellis system. ... For those of you who appreciate the beauty and precision of vineyard rows, it’s because of the hardworking men and women of crews like this one. Next time you enjoy a great glass of wine, give a quiet toast to the hardworking vineyard and winery crews who make it all possible." You can see more of Christopher's wine country photography here.
