  1. A fatal house fire in central Healdsburg early Thursday morning killed one person and several pets (three cats and four birds), according to the Healdsburg Fire Department. Our fire chief says it was a “chaotic scene." The house that burned is a small blue one on Prince Street between Grant and Piper. From the Press Democrat: "The burning home sits on a narrow residential street in the central part of town. An apartment building behind the home was evacuated but there was otherwise no damage to nearby property. The deceased person was among six people living at the home. The other five were outside when firefighters arrived, Division Chief and Fire Marshal Lance Macdonald said." When firefighters went inside, they reportedly found another resident and the seven pets already dead, but were able to save one dog and one cat. A local firefighter suffered minor burns during the rescue, but he's doing OK. Fire officials say "the cause of this fire is still under investigation and the victim's identity will be released when all family members have been notified." 2. The Press Democrat has a new, two-part exposé on a "Healdsburg timber operator" whose "checkered land-use history followed him to Sonoma County." The story begins: "To hear Ken Bareilles tell it, the worst thing to happen on his land west of Healdsburg since the 2020 Walbridge Fire was the felling of charred Douglas fir trees that now lie on the ground, dried and cracking, because there’s so little demand at the mills. To hear his neighbors tell it, the worst thing to happen since the Walbridge Fire has been Ken Bareilles. It’s not just the neighbors. He’s seen as a bad actor by environmental watchdogs, regulators and others who have watched his emergency timber operation unfold on 106 acres in the sensitive Felta Creek watershed. Set among lush redwoods and ferns, the creek is a last refuge for endangered coho salmon." Read the full investigation here. (Press Democrat & Press Democrat; paywall)
  3. A new beer garden is growing in Healdsburg, and it could open to be public as soon as Fourth of July. Fogbelt Station, the newest location of Santa Rosa's Fogbelt Brewery, will be located in what the Tribune is calling "Healdsburg’s very own Depot District... along the tracks between Old Roma Station and the Healdsburg Depot" next to the river. It will reportedly serve "light beers, dark beers, IPAs, stouts [and] lagers" — along with "beer-compatible food" from "a different menu than what’s available in Santa Rosa" — outdoors along Hudson Street, "where several tables will be set up beneath a large wood pergola." And "additional seating will be on the track side of the red Great Northern Railway caboose, which adds to the 'station' atmosphere." Some more backstory from the Trib: "Paul Hawley and Remy Martin established Fogbelt Brewery in 2013 after several years in the wine business—appropriately, as Paul’s father is John Hawley, whose own tasting room is downtown, and Remy’s dad is Dennis Martin, longtime winemaker at Fetzer. Both are also Healdsburg High graduates, and they worked a season together as wine interns." The caboose itself has a pretty great backstory, too. Click through for the full scoop! Bohrman, also on Sherman; ceramicist Robert Weiss out Jack Pine Road off West Dry Creek; and sculptor T Barny out Pine Flat. Go visit them today or tomorrow and see what they're up to! (Art at the Source)
  • There's also an interesting new sculpture exhibit at Paradise Ridge Winery in Santa Rosa, featuring the work of Healdsburg sculptor Doug Unkrey. If you remember, Unkrey got "worldwide attention in 2018 when his 21-foot-long, 800-pound ball-peen hammer sculpture was stolen from the lawn of the Healdsburg Community Center," the PD reports.
