Here are the top 3 stories in Healdsburg today:

  1. Little Saint, the large new food/art/event space on North Street in downtown Healdsburg, has been selected as one of the venues for this year's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival. Like many big events, the festival went virtual for COVID over the last couple years — so they're coming back with a bang in 2022 by adding an extra "Out of the Park" series to the main, famously free three-day concert in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. According to the SF Chronicle, these more intimate nighttime shows will take place at three different San Francisco theaters, plus Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley and Little Saint. For our local show on Sept. 30, the artist will be singer-songwriter Aoife O’Donovan, lead vocalist for the Crooked Still string band and a co-founder of the women's folk trio I'm With Her. (SF Chronicle Datebook)
  2. Marshall Turbeville, fire chief for the Northern Sonoma County Fire District protecting Healdsburg's rural outskirts, has been named "volunteer fire chief of the year" by the International Association of Fire Chiefs. "Chief Marshall Turbeville led his community’s response to the devastating wildfires in California over the last several years, including the Tubbs, Pocket, Kincade, and Wallbridge fires," the judges say. "These events not only caused widespread damage and destruction, but they also triggered significant emotional and psychological trauma within the community and the fire department. After frontline experience fighting these fires, Chief Turbeville determined the status quo response to the firestorms was inadequate and worked with his community to develop new strategies focused on prevention, preparedness, and appropriate mitigation methods to save future life, property, and the environment." Our chief accepted the honor at a recent ceremony in Champaign, Illinois. (International Association of Fire Chiefs & Firehouse)
  3. Sonoma County Gazette contributor Merrilyn Joyce just published a great little feature where she asked all of the new Healdsburg City Council candidates what they think about the extravagant new Healdsburg Wine & Food Experience, which made its debut earlier this year. It's the first time we've really heard from them all in one place. "Last May, Healdsburg hosted a large wine country lifestyle event near the heart of downtown, with a range of ticket prices, upwards to $10,000 a pair," she writes. "The promoter seeks to make it an annual event extending to 3 days. On November 8, 2022, Healdsburg voters will elect 3 members to the city council to fill two 4-year terms and one 2-year term. Each of the candidates were invited to respond to the following question: 'Should Healdsburg continue to host this ‘international food and wine’ event?'" Click through to read their answers. • The Wurst restaurant on Matheson has been forced to close their doors for the foreseeable future due to a recent flood in the building, owners say. "We will keep everyone posted as we learn more about our future," they write online. In the meantime, they'll be serving food at Tuesdays on the Plaza and are "still available for offsite catering." (Facebook Groups)
  • Neighbors say an empty trailer burned down at the Russian River Trailer Park late last week. Manny Sahota, who owns the nearby Memorial Beach Market with his wife Emily, writes on Facebook that "the trailer park next to my store the manager Lee who passed away a few months ago I believe his trailer burnt that's the information I am getting from the people that live in the park." It doesn't sound like anyone was hurt, fortunately. (Facebook Groups)
  • In an apparently unrelated incident, Manny also says his market was robbed in the wee hours last Thursday, Aug. 18. "A guy came up broke our door with a crowbar," he says. "Stole a lot of stuff." Here's more from the official Healdsburg Police Dept. log, filed around 5 a.m.: "The Owner stated an employee walked in for her shift and the door to the business had been damaged and pried open. No suspect is on scene currently. Money from the till, lotto tickets and scratchers are items [that the reporting party] believes were stolen." (Facebook Groups & Healdsburg Police Department)
  • And police logs show there was another robbery reported at Healdsburg Gas Mart that same morning, in which "scratchers and approx. 3K in inventory" were allegedly stolen overnight. (Healdsburg Police Department)
  • Gerald Thomas "Jerry" Wood, who grew up in Healdsburg and spent 27 years as a deputy sheriff in Lake County, has passed away in his late 80s. From his obituary: "Jerry grew up enjoying swimming in the Russian River, riding his bike, and playing with his dog, Spot. ... Jerry met his wife, Joan, when they were 3 years old growing up in Healdsburg. They were always good friends but did not marry until years later after they were both divorced." (Legacy.com)
  • Healdsburg resident John "Jack" Frost just submitted a bunch of cool old pics to the Healdsburg Museum — including some "peacetime parade photos of Healdsburg celebrating at end of World War I." Check them out here. (Healdsburg Museum via Facebook)
  • TIL that you can read the New York Times for free with your Sonoma County Library card... (Sonoma County Library via Facebook)
  • The private Healdsburg Futbol Club for competitive youth soccer players is holding a carnival this fall. And they still need a good DJ. (Nextdoor)
