Here are the top 3 stories today in Healdsburg:
- The San Francisco Chronicle covers the shocking closure of Campo Fina today, writing that "the city of Healdsburg is reeling after Campo Fina, an inviting and casual Italian restaurant with a bocce ball court, announced it’s closing after 10 years." The Chronicle continues: "Known fondly around Healdsburg as 'Campo,' the business developed a reputation as a friendly, community-first restaurant that catered to locals while welcoming tourists. The restaurant’s brick-laden back alley near the Healdsburg Plaza was a go-to gathering place for bocce tournaments — one hand used for rolling, another for holding a glass of wine — and hearty meals consisting of wood-fired pizzas, pastas, paninis and classic Italian snacks like olives, arancini and meatballs. Former Chronicle restaurant critic Michael Bauer once called Campo Fina’s pizza 'among the best in the Bay Area.'" Campo's owners, Ari and Dawnelise Rosen, said the main reasons they're closing are the "doubling of our rent this year, a national labor shortage, rampant growth in our town, inflation, and the lack of housing for our staff." Meanwhile, neighbors are lamenting the loss of Campo on Nextdoor and speculating about all the factors that drove them out of town. (Nextdoor & SF Chronicle; paywall)
- The Press Democrat ran an interesting story recently on some cool fire-season tech being used at Healdsburg winery Aperture Cellars, run by local wine innovator Jesse Katz. "With the concurrence of harvest and fire season, winemakers often find themselves flummoxed, consumed by stress," the PD writes. "But can technology temper winemakers’ frayed nerves? It appears so. Now, winemakers can run fermentations from an iPad or cellphone should they have to evacuate. Those making wine in underground caves can take refuge by closing the portal door and sealing themselves off from smoke and fire." Katz explains that "harvest has become so stressful" that he "has started to dread it" — but "several features" introduced at Aperture in recent years have helped him "weather the unpredictable nature of the season." More from the story: "The winery has a generator in case of power outages and two 60,000-gallon holding tanks of water, as backup for irrigation, fire suppression and the wine tasting room.It also has a refrigerated storage room kept at 45 degrees that can preserve 20 tons of fruit for several days, should a fire quicken the pace of picking. But what gives Katz the most relief is that he has 33 fermentation tanks, each with its own pump and computer. That allows him to monitor and control each remotely." (Press Democrat; paywall)
- The past few weeks of Healdsburg police logs are live on the department's website. Here are some standout reports: An apparent vehicle crash into the parklet outside the Idlewild Wines tasting room just off the plaza, leaving "significant damage, possibly several thousand dollars" worth; woman in her mid 30s arrested at Valero after officers found she was carrying "drug paraphernalia"; another young woman arrested outside Dollar Tree for drunk driving; someone discharged from the ER at Healdsburg Hospital who then allegedly refused to leave; someone on Sunnyvale Drive who claimed some hooligans "in shorts and tall socks just put cheese wiz on her vehicle" for the third time; and the usual string of calls from businesses asking police to come deal with apparent transients or rowdy folks on their properties, including the Craftwork co-working space, the Duchamp hotel and Bank of America.
