  1. The proposed "Dry Creek Commons" affordable housing project in Healdsburg just got an infusion of a little over $1.25 million from the county government. The money will fund "57 new affordable housing units for households with incomes between 30 and 60 percent of the area median income," Sonoma County officials announced yesterday. "It represents a crucial component in reducing homelessness as the county continues efforts to sustain and rapidly expand housing for those experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of becoming homeless." The new apartment complex is planned for Dry Creek Road on the way out of town, across from the Hotel Trio and behind Big Johns. The developer, Burbank Housing, has said they're partnering with the city to "develop the 3.5 acre vacant undeveloped, City-owned site located at 155 Dry Creek Road with affordable housing for lower income families in our community," and that "the project also includes a partnership with Reach for Home, helping to ensure everyone has access to housing." You can see renderings of what they want the building to look like on their website. (Sonoma County Government & Burbank Housing)
  2. Speaking of affordable housing! Starting a couple Mondays from now, on May 23, you'll be able to throw your name in the hat to live in the new Mill District Apartments complex — located alongside a bunch of other, more luxury housing in the new Mill District development by the Healdsburg roundabout downtown. The Sonoma County Housing Authority says it "will accept housing voucher applications May 23 through July 1," and that "applicants will be required to provide information regarding income and any preferences for which they may qualify." One-, two- and three-bedroom units are reportedly available. If you're interested, here's a bunch more info from the county. (Sonoma County Gov via Healdsburg Patch & WaitListCheck.com)
  3. The Healdsburg High School boys basketball team just lost another coach. Kevin Leffew has stepped down after a single season, according to the Press Democrat. Under his leadership, "the Greyhounds went 11-13 overall and finished fourth in the NBL-Oak this past season, earning the No. 11 seed in the Division 4 North Coast Section playoffs before falling to No. 6 seed Del Norte 45-44 in their postseason opener," the PD reports. "Leffew replaced Yasha Mokaram last summer after Mokaram stepped down following five successful seasons in Healdsburg." Presumably the high school will be looking for another replacement in time for basketball season this fall! (Press Democrat; paywall)

Healdsburg pic of the day:

Randy Varney, who lives in the hills west of Healdsburg, took this pic from his front porch yesterday of the epic skies over Dry Creek Valley. "It shows snow on Mt. St. Helena and part of a rainbow sneaking in on the left," he says. "It was part of an arc that touched down somewhere over Big Ridge (at least from my vantage point)." • The Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce's big annual "Spring Sip & Shop" event, which had been scheduled for tomorrow, is now canceled "due to very low ticket sales." From chamber officials: "The goal of this event was to showcase and provide extra exposure to our Chamber members. Taking into consideration the severe workforce issues our community is facing, we did not feel it would be beneficial for our members to host this event that would cater to only a handful of attendees." They say they'll be rescheduling soon. • You can still go wild this weekend at the sidewalk sale, though! A whole bunch of businesses surrounding the plaza are participating. (City of Healdsburg)
  • All in all, Healdsburg only got around 0.2 inches of rain this week, the PD reports — along with some crazy sideshows like hail and lightning and rainbows. This weekend will be another story altogether: Forecast is showing lots of sun and temps in the 80s. (Press Democrat; paywall)
  • With all the water restrictions being imposed by local entities across California right now, Healdsburg is back in the spotlight for the radical water savings we achieved last summer. (KMPH Fox 26)
