Here are the top 3 stories in Healdsburg today:

  1. There was a small earthquake just north of Healdsburg, near the Geysers, in the wee hours yesterday, reportedly "rousting local residents out of their beds but causing no other damage." It was a magnitude 3.8 — followed by a smaller, 2.4-mag quake a few minutes later. So of course, TV news in the Bay Area took the opportunity to warn us that "scientists say a massive earthquake could strike the Bay Area at any moment." NBC reports: "The so-called Big One could happen at any moment. Seismologists are most concerned about the Hayward Fault, which cuts through the heavily populated Alameda County." USA Today also ran a story recently on similar doomsday predictions for our region. (Healdsburg Patch & NBC Bay Area & USA Today; paywall)
  2. Did you know there's a phone number in Healdsburg you can call for "an immediate pick-me-up" and some wise advice from local students? Press Democrat columnist Kerry Benefield recently called the number — 707-998-8410 — and was delighted by what he found. “If you are feeling mad, frustrated or nervous, press 1," the recording says. "If you need words of encouragement or life advice, press 2. If you need a pep talk from kindergartners, press 3. If you need to hear kids laughing with delight, press 4. For encouragement in Spanish, press 5.” And for each option, there are a bunch of unique messages from kids at Westside School, "each in their own voice." Pretty special, right? 3. Healdsburg nonprofit Farm to Pantry is getting press for their new partnership with a local Black-owned fashion company called Gapelii Brand. The org's volunteers, who "glean" any leftover fruits and vegetables from farms in our area and distribute them to the hungry, are now wearing shirts designed by Gapelii. The fashion brand's cofounder explains that the shirts "provide volunteers with something comfortable, something classy looking and something that they could be proud of, and maybe even as a tool to attract more volunteers. So, we came together and went over the design concepts, and we came up with the hunger relief T-shirt and long sleeve being perfect for gleaning out in the fields."
