Here are the top 3 stories today in Healdsburg:
- Local nonprofit Corazón Healdsburg is looking for a new executive director. Their previous CEO, Glaydon J de Freitas Filho, quietly and mysteriously vacated his position about four months back, after being appointed with much fanfare in the fall of 2020. Now, org leaders say they're shooting to find a new top dog (with a slightly different title) by early 2023. "Since the departure of our previous leader in June, the Board and staff have remained focused on continuing to provide uninterrupted services and programming to our community," they say. And until they find a new director, Corazón has announced that "Marcy Flores, who has been overseeing programs and direct client services since June, will assume the role of interim Executive Director." Here's some more info on Marcy from the org's newsletter: "Marcy previously led Corazón’s academic development team and will move into the role of deputy Director once a new Executive Director is on board. A recognized leader in our community, Marcy helped develop Corazón’s FirstGen College Counseling program, the Kinder2College Savings Fund, and the early literacy Libros y Raíces (Books and Roots) programs. She will be supported as interim Executive Director by Corazón co-founder, Ari Rosen, who will work closely with her and the organization to create the conditions for success in the coming year." - Another new shop will be opening right off the plaza next month! This one is a jewelry store called Falling for Dainty, and owner Brooke Gabrielian says she'll be hosting a grand opening event at noon on Nov. 5. According to the jewelry brand's website, Brooke is a Sonoma County resident who's been selling her jewelry through other stores and online since 2018 — but this will be her first storefront. The stuff on her website, at least, looks relatively affordable; most items appear to be under $100, with plenty under $50. Brooke wrote on Instagram last month: "Downtown Healdsburg on the square, here we come 📍 Falling for dainty is going to bring you the ultimate jewelry shopping experience IRL ✨ This means you can come by any time, get permanent jewelry any day, and book private events at the store! ⚡️ The space has been a jail, a spa, a tasting room, and now the home to falling for dainty ✨." Falling for Dainty will be located at 240 Center Street in the Oakville Grocery shopping center, right next to the police station. At the grand opening party next month, Brooke says "the first 25 customers receive a free pair of limited edition earrings with their purchase." She adds: "I can’t wait to reveal this space to you! It’s going to be so beautiful + so much new pretty jewelry 💖." (Falling for Dainty via Instagram & Google Maps)
- The City of Healdsburg will soon get 8 percent of its electricity from a new solar project called "the Antelope Expansion" down in Lancaster, CA — a desert town in the Antelope Valley, about an hour outside Los Angeles. The project "came online" a couple of weeks ago, and will provide a total "17-megawatts of solar generation, of which Healdsburg is entitled to 2-megawatts," city officials say. They add that "this new renewable energy source is expected to provide Healdsburg with roughly 5.9-million kilowatt-hours of energy annually" and "helps continue Healdsburg's efforts towards cleaner energy." Alongside this exciting announcement, the city also provided a breakdown of all the current "types of electricity generated and supplied to Healdsburg Electric customers" — including the Geysers, the Lodi Energy Center and our own floating solar array. See the full breakdown below. According to the city: "Approximately 60% of the citywide energy Healdsburg supplied in 2021 was no or low-carbon, and projects are underway to provide an additional 14% of these sources by 2023."
