Here are the top 5 stories in Healdsburg today:
- After multiple women reported to Healdsburg police earlier this year that their drinks had been spiked at Duke's Spirited Cocktails on the plaza, the bar has joined a national organization called "the SAFE Bar Network." In what appears to be a press release issued by the network, Duke's owners confirm they'll be receiving "training and technical assistance on a variety of topics, including sexual harassment prevention, bystander intervention, and alcohol service." They add that "through these trainings, employees learn to identify and prevent harassment, as well as how to safely cut customers off and ask them to leave." For context, the press release explains: "Duke’s Spirited Cocktails in Healdsburg recently opened a high-end sister cocktail bar and fine dining restaurant next door. After an extensive interior remodel and newly installed patio, Duke’s Cocktails decided it wasn’t just about the look of the bar, but the atmosphere as well." You can read the whole announcement here. (OCNJ Daily & Healdsburg Police Dept. via Facebook)
- The Healdsburg police logs for the past month — including a chaotic Fourth of July holiday weekend — are live on the police department's website, under the "Bulletin" section. This past weekend looks like it was pretty chaotic, too. Here are some of the more notable incidents reported so far in July: A slew of calls from more than a dozen neighbors who reported rogue fireworks being set off around town, plus a few who didn't know about the official, city-sanctioned ones at the high school and reported those, too; the much-talked-about murder at Monte Vista Avenue and Lupine Road right after the fireworks show; a 45-year-old woman cited for allegedly breaking into the L& Motel, where the city plans to open a shelter soon; someone else reported for breaking a "wood panel on the back patio" of the shuttered Giorgio's restaurant; a few new pieces of graffiti; some "petty theft" reports at the Big John's and Safeway shopping centers, including one where a guy "stole a hot container of meat and fed it to his dog" at Big John's; a dramatic argument near Memorial Bridge involving a woman screaming "he killed my cat" and "yelling about murder," who then disappeared into the bamboo forest; and much, much more. - There was a house fire near Terrace Boulevard and University Street over the weekend, according to nearby residents who watched firefighters put out the fire. And on that note — Healdsburg neighbors are talking on Nextdoor about how impressed they are with the large load of calls that local police and firefighters have been taking. In the words of the inimitable Anne Goebel: "I have to give a shout out to Healdsburg Police and Fire department. In the last 3 days there have been so many emergency calls I can't fathom how our [heroes] managed to keep us safe. Each call was in need of an immediate [response] and requiring all kinds of skills. I feel so safe. They are incredible." (Facebook Groups & Nextdoor & Nextdoor)
- One of the patriarchs of Healdsburg's Eddinger family, U.S. Air Force veteran Clifford Charles "Jack" Eddinger, has passed away at the age of 89. "Born into an old pioneering Sonoma County CA family, Jack was well known from his long Banking career as Vice President with Exchange Bank, years on the Board of the Sonoma County Fair, Board Member for Sonoma State University, evening teacher at SRJC and numerous fraternal and charitable organizations," according to his obituary. "After retirement he moved to Southern IL where his wife has family." Jack was known as as somewhat of a "Renaissance Man," the obit says — a "master carpenter, private pilot, cowboy, home and recreation destination developer, and outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing and just being up in the mountains." His surviving relatives in Healdsburg include Jerry and Mary Lou Eddinger. His dad was Healdsburg resident Charles Sidney Eddinger, his mom was Opal DeLisle and his step-brother was John DeLisle. (Legacy.com)
- There's a new "beverage container recycling kiosk" open in the parking lot outside Healdsburg City Hall on Grove Street. More info from the city: "Hours are Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 10 am – 2 pm in the parking lot located at 485 Grove St. Please separate glass, plastic, and aluminum, and also do not crush the cans." Our city manager, Jeff Kay, had previously announced at a City Council meeting last month that this "portable recycling center" would be a "pilot program" with "fairly limited hours." Now you can go try it out! (Nextdoor & City of Healdsburg)

From my notebook:
- A couple of quick corrections from the weekend edition I sent out Friday! There was in fact no free pipe-organ concert held Sunday at St. Paul's Church — and going forward, they're "on hiatus" until Sept. 11, a rep says. Secondly, I mis-wrote the last name of Healdsburg Museum boss Holly Hoods in a photo caption. My apologies on both fronts. (Inbox & Healdsburg Patch)
- Protesters are holding a big rally down in Santa Rosa tomorrow for women's reproductive rights. (Facebook Groups)
- A 55-year-old Healdsburg man died in a "double fatal accident" on the 5 yesterday, according to the CHP. They haven't released his name yet, but I'll keep you posted. (YourCentralValley.com)
Now you're in the loop for today. See you all tomorrow!
