Here are the top 3 stories in Healdsburg today:
- The Sonoma County Sheriff has released the identity of the man shot dead by sheriff's deputies in rural Healdsburg last Friday, out in the Chalk Hill Road area. His name was David Pelaez Chavez, a 36-year-old from Lower Lake in Lake County. And the deputies involved were Michael Dietrick and Anthony Powers — both now on administrative leave. Deputies claim that when they approached him, Chavez "repeatedly made 'nonsensical' statements and refused to drop his weapons, which were a claw hammer and a tiller in one hand a big rock in the other," according to Fox's local news station for the Bay Area. Also that he "threatened to hit one of them with a 'cantaloupe sized' river rock." They say they asked him to drop the objects multiple times before shooting him. Chavez had come onto the sheriff's radar early that morning, when multiple residents in the area reported him for allegedly trespassing on their property and trying to break into their homes while carrying large rocks. At one point he even allegedly dragged someone 20 feet with his truck, though that person "did not sustain significant injuries." Chavez then "drove through several vineyard gates and property fences," the TV news station reports, and "crashed the truck into a ditch near the 5600 block of Tre Monte Lane." That's around where deputies say they caught up with him. (Fox KTVU2)
- For the first time ever, last night's Healdsburg City Council meeting was translated into Spanish in real time — both at the in-person City Hall meeting and in the virtual Zoom version. Mayor Ozzy Jimenez is calling it a "historic moment." Leaders of the Corazón Healdsburg nonprofit agree, writing to their followers: "Our city council makes lots of important decisions about life here in Healdsburg and it's so important that we all have a voice in the process. We hope to see you at a meeting soon!" (Corazón Healdsburg via Facebook & & Ozzy Jimenez via Facebook)
- The Healdsburg Prune Packers, our local baseball team in California's collegiate summer league — a warmup ground for the major leagues, and a place for college players to stay sharp in the off-season — are nearing the end of their season. And so far they're in first place for the whole league! They won the championship last year, too. Catch them at Rec Park tonight at 6 p.m. for their final home game of the season against the Walnut Creek Crawdads, before they head down to the playoffs in Southern California from Aug. 4 through Aug. 7. Good luck, boys! (Healdsburg Tribune & Gold Country Media)
