Here are the top 3 stories in Healdsburg today:
- More backstory is emerging about the shocking Fourth of July shooting in the residential area near Healdsburg High School, right after the city's fireworks show. Windsor resident Luis Enrique Gonzalez, 27, was shot dead just after 11 p.m. on Monte Vista Avenue near Lupine — a spot now marked by a makeshift memorial with candles, empty 40s and chalk tributes. According to the Healdsburg Tribune, he had "previously been associated with gang activity" and "was arrested in April, 2021 for a broad daylight knife attack outside the Healdsburg Community Center" — although "inquiries to the Deputy Attorney’s office for the disposition of that arrest had not been answered by press time." More from the Trib: "Police Chief Matt Jenkins confirmed that there is an active investigation within the police department of the crime, led by Officer Jason Olvera. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to call Olvera at 707-431-3377. 'We’re still piecing together what led up to the shooting; that’s why we’re asking for anyone who has information to call us,' said Jenkins the next day. The prevalence of both legal and illegal fireworks may have complicated public awareness of the gunfire." (Healdsburg Tribune)
- One of Healdsburg's fancy new housing developments, the twelve-home "Riverhouse" complex on Kennedy Lane near the river, just got a few big design awards at a trade show down in San Francisco. "The theme was 'The Future of Home,'" the Tribune reports, "and on awards night on June 22, the Riverhouse won not one but two gold medals, and three awards of merit, 'Golden Nuggets,' from the building industry itself for excellence in the art of design." The complex was built by Jim Heid, founder of the CraftWork co-working space downtown, who moved to Healdsburg about 10 years ago with his wife and daughter. Before building Riverhouse, he reportedly "conducted a survey of what type of housing residents would like to see in their community" and was "pleasantly surprised to see that the 'cottage court' housing option was by far the most popular of the six presented." Aka, "a small community of houses and cottages, linked by paths instead of driveways, emphasizing community over commerce, with a shared courtyard or green." And that's pretty much what Riverhouse looks like. Current residents "tend to gather in the common green for 'happy hour,' visit neighboring wineries and parks together, and go out to lunch," according to the Tribune. You can find out more about the project in the Trib and on the architect's website. (Healdsburg Tribune & JZMK Partners)
- A new packing and shipping business just opened in the Big John's shopping center, in the storefront where H&R Block used to be, according to owner Shawn Nichols. This is his second location for Pack Ship & More; the first is in Windsor. "Come on by and check us out!" Shawn writes on Facebook. "We are located next to Big John's at 1363 Healdsburg Ave. We are excited to open our second location and strive to provide the best service with a smile. We are your locally owned and operated neighborhood shipping store. We will be offering FedEx, DHL, USPS and Freight shipping services. We provide Notary services, copy/print services black/white and color, laminating, binding, fax, scan/email, custom packaging, office supplies, passport photos, local products, custom apparel and so much more!! Are you a Healdsburg resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?
Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.
Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.
Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:
- Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
- Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
- Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)

(Press Democrat; paywall)
