Here are the top 5 stories in Healdsburg today:

  1. Healdsburg will be getting a new high-end sandwich shop by the end of the month, according to Sonoma Magazine. It's called the Troubadour, and it's brought to you by the same people who run the Quail and Condor bakery down south of the roundabout on Healdsburg Avenue. Their new sandwich shop will be located on the same street, but much more centrally: It's going into that little complex less than a block north of the plaza, right where Moustache Baked Goods used to be. According to Sonoma Mag, "chefs-owners Melissa Yanc and Sean McGaughey (formerly of Single Thread) describe their second venture as 'naturally fermented bread, chef-inspired and locally sourced wizardry.'" And they're currently staffing up, in case you're "interested in becoming a bread aficionado, sandwich sorcerer or counter-service warlock." (Sonoma Magazine & Troubadour Healdsburg)
  2. We may get another big rain early next week. The predicted Sonoma County storm “has the potential to fall into that atmospheric river-type range,” weather officials say — but still “very, very mild” compared to the whopper a couple weeks ago. Hard to say anything for sure this far out, though. Meanwhile, the Sacramento Bee is still trying to figure out what all this rain means for the drought. In short: We need 140 percent of our usual precipitation this rainy season — or 28 more inches — to get back to normal. Normal in this case meaning there's "a sufficient amount water to moisturize the soil to conditions where runoff to the reservoirs is possible." And for this, consistent, sustained rains are needed — not just sprinkles or quick, crazy thunderstorms. Hopefully next week's will be some of those! (SF Gate & Press Democrat & Sacramento Bee; paywalls)
  3. The Tribune ran a fascinating piece this week on the past and future of everyone's favorite local nonprofit, Corazón Healdsburg. “We do not want to be the white saviors of the community,” says the org's year-old CEO, Glaydon de Freitas. In his first year at Corazón, de Freitas says he wanted to make the org's interactions with the Hispanic community less "transactional" and more "transformational." So Corazón interviewed 200 residents and 50 community leaders to get a better idea of what they wanted. Two major needs emerged: a sense of belonging and upward social mobility. "If you ask fourth generation Mexican descent people here, they still say they do not belong here," the CEO said. "They do not go to events in the Plaza, they do not participate in gatherings." Read more in the Tribune about Corazón's current and future initiatives in town. (SoCoNews Healdsburg)
  4. Good news for Christmas lovers: There will be a big tree-lighting ceremony on the plaza this year, along with chorus singers and photos with Santa and the whole shebang. Mark your calendar for Friday, Dec. 3. And if you wanna get fancy, Hotel Healdsburg will be hosting a series of "holiday high teas" on the first three weekends of December, complete with “dainty finger sandwiches"! For gift shopping, remember — there's an ongoing holiday craft section of the Healdsburg farmers market every Saturday through Dec. 18. Another local holiday market full of "handcrafted, unique gifts" will also be opening in a couple weeks, on Nov. 18, at the Healdsburg Center for the Arts. And lastly, a local ladies group is throwing an "old-fashioned Christmas Bazaar" at the Alexander Valley Hall on Dec. 4 with festive stuff like ornaments, wreaths, table settings, etc. (Inbox & Facebook & Facebook & SFGate)
  5. It's Healdsburg Police Log time. Local police reports taken during the week leading up to Halloween included: a woman who tried to report a theft to police after she bought a bag of "dope" worth $150 that turned out to be empty; someone who called cops about a "female driver of a Camero that drives through Healdsburg Avenue [and] has a loud backfire," causing "elder people dodge away from the sound out of fear"; another catalytic converter theft on Orangewood Drive; a drunk man and woman seen stumbling down Center Street, looking for their car; a hit-and-run on Center Street involving a gray BMW that took off; and a College Avenue resident who said she was "sitting in the living room when her window was broken with rocks" on the night of Halloween. That last lady believed it may have been "trick-or-treaters playing a prank." (SoCoNews Healdsburg)
