Here are the top 3 stories today in Healdsburg:

  1. A couple different earthquakes hit near Healdsburg on Saturday, both with a magnitude of around 3.4. The first one hit at approximately 11:18 a.m. and the second at 8:17 p.m. A bunch of Healdsburg residents took to the "What's Happening Healdsburg" Facebook group to report their experience. "A nice shaker," said Ward Willis of the nighttime quake. "Came down the hill like a heavy truck on the highway. A couple big pops and it kept on going." Another says her "cats were going bonkers." Neighbors from Parkland Farms to Fitch Mountain to the downtown area chimed in to say that they definitely felt it. And ironically, the very next morning — aka, yesterday — county officials from various big fire and emergency agencies held their annual "Fire and Earthquake Safety Expo" up in Cloverdale. "Two Earthquakes in the last 10 hours, what does that mean?" the Northern Sonoma County Fire District, which protects Healdsburg's rural parts, posted on social media. "It means you really should go to the Fire and Earthquake Safety Expo tomorrow!" (Healdsburg Patch & Facebook & Facebook & Los Angeles Times)
  2. This one brings me so much joy. Kim and Dave Lockhart, new-ish owners of Healdsburg river tour company River’s Edge Kayak and Canoe, are reviving a historic art project from 1976 called "Running Fence" — only this time, it comes in the form of a five-day Russian River canoe trip. The original project was a 24.5-mile fabric fence stretching across the land of Sonoma County, erected by "ragtag crew" in the face of wild, unpredictable winds and a "judge’s verdict" ready to shut them down, according to the Press Democrat. Now, "harnessing that same unpredictable West County wind, River’s Edge Kayak and Canoe owners... are repurposing a portion of 'Running Fence' fabric into a boat sail to launch the inaugural Christo Voyage from Healdsburg to Jenner," the PD reports. "The weeklong Russian River trek will start with a moonlight paddle on May 14 and end with a screening of brothers Albert and David Maysles’ documentary 'Running Fence' on May 21 at the Monte Rio Theater. Participants can drop in for opening and closing day events or go all in by joining four-day and seven-day trips down the river." Read more about this crazy local voyage in the PD. 3. There's another great story in the North Bay Business Journal about Healdsburg beekeepers and their latest strategy to "protect their pollinators from the elements": Moving them to the upscale, well-landscaped resorts of our region. "For decades, it’s been tough for the super pollinators that have endured parasites, pesticides, weather extremes and urbanization," the Business Journal reports. "But with the help from the finer digs in the Wine Country like the Fairmont Sonoma and Montage Healdsburg, the hope among North Bay beekeepers is a bumper crop of honey awaits — even with fewer flowers expected to provide nectar and pollen. ... Resorts in the Wine Country use the honey in their restaurants, spas and shops as a natural, farm-fresh ingredient to eat or heal from. The beekeepers split the bounty of honey and often remain on retainer to tend to the hives. [Healdsburg beekeeper Candice Koseba] charges at least $200 per hive, with a two-hive minimum and extra surcharge if the locations are difficult to get to. She locally sources the bees by capturing wild swarms, like a recent call that came from the owner of a horse farm in Windsor." (North Bay Business Journal; paywall)
