Also, FYI: There's a "freeze warning" going into effect tonight and lasting through Thursday night, due to predicted "sub-freezing temperatures in the overnight and early morning hours." Temps are supposed to drop down into the 20s. Weather officials recommend you "take steps now to protect" your tender outdoor plants, water pipes and sprinkler systems from the cold. Air over Healdsburg:

Here are the top 5 stories today in Healdsburg:
- A woman died in a horrible hit and run on the 101 through Healdsburg in the wee hours last Thursday. It was just after midnight, and she had stayed behind on the shoulder of the freeway "with a pickup that was out of gas while her companion went for help," according to the Press Democrat. When her companion returned with the gas for their Chevy pickup, he reportedly found that she'd been "struck and was lying in the roadway. He called 911 as the suspected vehicle fled the scene." Police are now asking everyone to keep their eye out for the car that killed her — a "silver or similar-colored 2019 or 2021 Ram pickup" with "damage from the collision on the right front and possibly the right side." The woman who died hasn't been named by authorities yet, "pending notification of next of kin." May she rest in peace. (Press Democrat; paywall)
- There was a small but alarming "duct fire" at Healdsburg's Michelin-starred SingleThread Farm-Restaurant-Inn on North Street late Friday night. Neighbors reportedly called the fire department after they spotted smoke and flames coming from the roof of the restaurant building. After the staff at SingleThread "tried to put out the small fire with fire extinguishers," they were "evacuated from the building safely," and firefighters had the fire out within 10 minutes of arriving, according to the Tribune. SingleThread's owners updated their customers on Facebook the next day, saying that the restaurant "had a small fire last night in our exhaust system, thankfully no one was hurt, and we will be closed for the time being as we repair and assess." - Speaking of the Healdsburg Fire Department! Tribune columnist Marie "Hedda Healdsburg" Butler reports that we'll be seeing a fancy new fire truck around town starting early next month. From her latest column: "Recently, a Healdsburg Fire Department team... flew to Wisconsin to inspect the work on a new Pierce Ladder Truck. 'It’s a really beautiful truck,' said Fire Chief Jason Boaz. 'We put a lot of thought into the purchase. It’s basically a rolling, multi-purpose tool box, with pump, hose, and tools.' It has a dual rear axle, a tighter turning radius, and a 107-foot ladder, making this the longest ladder in the county. Since Healdsburg responds to mutual aid requests, this added feature will be an asset for the town’s needs and also for the greater community. The Pierce truck replaces an aging City fire truck with just a 75-foot ladder." (SoCoNews Healdsburg)
- This is pretty cool. A "guaranteed basic income pilot program" expected to launch later this year in Healdsburg will give 50 local "young, low-income mothers with children under 5" a sum of $500 per month for two years, according to the Press Democrat. The idea is for the money to "help make up the gap that often occurs during early childhood when mothers need help to pay for child care or to make up the income deficit if they decide to stay home." It's reportedly the first program of its kind in Sonoma County. The Healdsburg City Council "set aside $250,000 from the American Rescue Plan Act for the program last September," the PD says, and will need to release those funds this spring to get the program started. Then “people should be able to apply in late summer or early fall.” Local nonprofit Corazón Healdsburg is also involved, and is reportedly "considering a random selection in the form of a lottery to choose which families get the stipends." (U.S. Sun & Press Democrat; paywall)
- Have you ever been to Alma's Oilcloth and Chucherias at 437 Healdsburg Avenue, in that little shopping center between French Nails and Spicy Vines Winery? The Tribune has a great feature on the 10-year-old business and its mastermind, Alma Vigil. She sells "art, knickknacks, decorative flowers and more emblematic items which celebrate Latinx culture" at the store, the Trib reports. "Her family is from the state of Michoacán and Vigil had been exposed to this kind of artistry since she was young. ... Looking at the painted artistry and celebration of color inspired her. This made her want to bring back a little bit of that to Sonoma County." And during the pandemic, Vigil stayed afloat — and even thrived — by upping her social media game and building a serious online following of over 56,000 people. You can learn more about her journey in the Trib or check out her awesome inventory on Instagram. (SoCoNews Healdsburg & Google Maps & Instagram)
