  1. The sad, lonely shell of what was once Healdsburg's beloved Singletree diner (R.I.P.), across from the new Mill District development site on Healdsburg Avenue, is finally getting a tenant: Eastern-European restaurant Tisza Bistro, run by Chef Krisztian Karkus. He plans to open in Healdsburg "sometime this year," according to Sonoma Magazine, and may even brew his own beer at the new location. He previously ran the same restaurant in Windsor, but closed it in August 2020 "after a three-year stint complicated by multiple fires." Since then, Chef Karkus has reportedly been spotted "trying to feed wildfire evacuees, cooking with a waffle iron he bought a Kohl’s" and "popping up at the Windsor Certified Farmers Market serving schnitzel and holding over his grateful fans." Sonoma Mag also gives some background on Singletree, which closed in February after more than 20 years: "It arrived in Healdsburg long before the many high-end restaurants now in the area created the current Beverly Hills vibe. A major struggle for Singletree, at 165 Healdsburg Ave., was ongoing construction of the Mill District just across the street. Ongoing road closures made it difficult to turn left into the restaurant’s parking lot."(Sonoma Magazine)
  2. More exciting local restaurant news from North Street! At long last, the Little Saint restaurant, market and art/event space opens its doors today — on Earth Day — in the same giant building where SHED previously tried to make a similar concept work. Little Saint is now open from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily at 25 North St. It's a collaboration between local couple Laurie and Jeff Ubben, who own the space, and the Michelin-decorated chefs behind Healdsburg's SingleThread restaurant — plus renowned designer Ken Fulk, who's taking care of the "art/event" part. The whole operation reverberates with a decidedly "environmental mantra," Cultured Mag reports. More from Wine Spectator: "For the completely plant-based menu, chef Bryan Oliver is using ingredients sourced from Little Saint’s farm, as well as SingleThread’s farm and other local producers, emphasizing how a restaurant can help maintain a healthy ecosystem that delivers quality produce. The results, many shareable, are dishes like cauliflower biryani with basmati rice, potato–green garlic soup, mokum carrots with shaved red cabbage and carrot cake with walnuts." And now we can all stop by to try it for ourselves. (Wine Spectator & Cultured Magazine)
  3. The Healdsburg Tribune just another grave update on its impending shutdown. They had already announced that their final print edition would go out next Thursday, April 28, after 157 years. But now they're also saying that "the email newsletters that publish every Monday and Thursday will go on hiatus" that same day. The board of directors for the Tribune's parent nonprofit, the Sonoma County Local News Initiative (better known as SoCoNews), explains: "This decision came after much research, thought and deliberation into the sustainability of a locally owned small town news organization. We don’t make this decision lightly. While these newsletters will stop, the nonprofit Sonoma County Local News Initiative will carry on, and we invite you to follow along." They haven't announced any accompanying journalist layoffs, and will apparently keep reporting on what's happening in Healdsburg via the SoCoNews website. By "follow along," I'm assuming they mean donate to the cause and continue to check the SoCoNews Healdsburg website for new stories being published, but I've reached out to them for clarity. You can donate here. (SoCoNews Healdsburg & Support SoCoNews)

Healdsburg pic of the day:

Healdsburg resident Sharon Leighty came to me with a local mystery this week, and I'm hoping one of you readers out there might be able to help. "There is some sort of elaborate structure that has been built on the east side of Dry Creek Road as you enter the valley, between Pozzan and Norris streets," Sharon writes (pictured above). "No one, even old timers I’ve asked in the area, seems to know what the heck it is. First we thought a really fancy dog park? An electric charging station for really teeny cars? It looks expensive and important and well thought out. It is built on a gorgeous parklike piece of land, close to the roadway, but I haven’t a clue as to what it could, or is still destined to, be?" So if you have an answer or even an inkling, please reach out and let me know so I can share with the group! 🕵️
