SMART Train Hits, Kills Cyclist On Tracks

A cyclist was hit and killed today after being struck by a Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit train, according to the Santa Rosa Police Department.

A southbound SMART train hit the bicyclist., who was traveling westbound at about 10:27 a.mon Piner Road on the south side of the tracks, police said.

Five passengers and two crew members onboard were not injured.

The warning signals appeared to be functioning when the collision happened, police said.

Investigators closed the train tracks for about three hours.

The bicyclist was not carrying identification. Accident investigators believe he is a Hispanic male in his 30s. They are currently attempting to verify his identity. Authorities will release his name after they notify his family.

The number 18 northbound trip, which was set to leave 12:15 p.m. from Larkspur, was cancelled due to the length of the initial delay, according to reports. There were train delays and one cancelled trip between the time of the crash and about 1:15 p.m., when the train service resumed, The Press Democrat reported.

SMART temporarily established a ā€œbus bridge,ā€ where busses are used to fill the gaps, between the Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport station parking lot and the Santa Rosa North SMART station. The bus bridge was cancelled when trains began moving again just before 1:15 p.m., according to reports.

This is the first SMART accident in the new year. There were at least two accidents in 2025.
