Here are the top 5 stories today in Healdsburg:

  1. Healdsburg's newest internet service, Sonic, is currently being installed across town. And once the work is done, according to the Healdsburg Tribune, we'll be the "fourth Sonoma County town, after Sebastopol, Petaluma and Santa Rosa, to enjoy a fiber optic network" — with speeds expected to be 100 times faster than existing options. For that we have Healdsburg resident and Sonic co-founder Dane Jasper to thank. "The first neighborhoods stand to go online in early August," the Tribune reports, and "as little as $30 a month can bring the fastest internet in the country." However, only around half the homes in Healdsburg will be within Sonic's service area for now. From the Trib: "Unfortunately it’s not going to be for everybody, at least not yet; and ironically it’s the newer neighborhoods that are left out this time. The fiber-optic cables will be installed using the existing overhead utility lines, meaning the streets with telephone poles. Newer developments, notably the 55-plus Rivers Bend communities and Parkland Farms, are lucky enough to have underground utilities, but at this point there’s no way to install a new data delivery system to those areas." You can see if your home is eligible on Sonic's website. (Healdsburg Tribune & Facebook Groups & Sonic)
  2. Update on the situation this year for hundreds of Healdsburg-area wineries, farms and other properties who pull water from the upper Russian River. There likely won't be any curtailments imposed by state water officials until at least July, according to the Press Democrat. "That means ranchers, grape growers, municipalities and community water districts can continue to draw water from the river and its tributaries for a couple more weeks," the PD reports, "before supplies in Lake Mendocino and potentially Lake Sonoma drop low enough for the state to declare there’s no longer enough water available for certain rights holders to take." However: A much more pressing deadline of this coming Monday, June 20, is looming for those who wish to enroll in a new, "groundbreaking voluntary water sharing agreement intended to allow those with older, 'senior' water rights who are least likely to be curtailed to share the pain with those who are first in line to have their rights suspended." State officials will then reportedly "determine if there are enough participants, and enough senior rights holders among them, for the program to work this year." You can find more info in both the Trib and the PD. (Healdsburg Tribune & Press Democrat; paywall)
  3. The Healdsburg police logs for the past month are live on the police department's website, under the "Bulletin" section. Reported incidents for last week alone include: Someone who allegedly "stole the donation tin off the counter" at Memorial Beach Market near the river, containing around $50 to $70, but apparently turned out to be a market employee; a fistfight under the palm trees in the plaza; an ambulance that rushed to Healdsburg High School after a student was believed to have overdosed on Fentanyl, or maybe marijuana; an iPhone stolen off the top of somebody's cooler as they danced at a plaza concert, then located by police after it "pinged" near Single Tree; a drunk guy seen peeing outside a bar on Plaza Street, and another who allegedly assaulted a bartender; someone who called 911 on a truck doing donuts in the Villa parking lot, but police couldn't find any "donut marks"; a transient sleeping outside the Mueller Winery tasting room on North Street, who was asked to leave; and many more. 4. The Matheson, our new monolith of a fine-dining establishment on the plaza, just got a hat tip from the folks over at the Michelin Guide. Alongside 16 other California restaurants, The Matheson has been designated as a "new discovery" — meaning it will be added to the digital guide and will be up for either an official "Bib Gourmand" or a "Star" later this fall, when Michelin's regular designation ceremonies come around. In the meantime, here are their notes on The Matheson: "Chef Dustin Valette's latest venture is in a soaring complex, but that never takes the focus away from the menu that weaves seasonal products with California flair and Mediterranean elements." (Eater SF)
  5. If you've been noticing more announcements than usual for runs and marathons out at Lake Sonoma this year, you're not wrong! According to Endurance Sportswire: "2022 was a huge year for the iconic Lake Sonoma Race Series (LSRS), which has grown from its roots as a small-town charity race founded by John Medinger fifteen years ago into a four-race series with distances from the marathon up to 100K. The relentlessly hilly, winding courses hosted over seven hundred runners over the four events this year, more than double the participants of any prior year, and raising over fifteen-thousand dollars for charity." It's also been a big year for female participation. Healdsburg Running Company owner Skip Brand tells the sportswire that despite all this growth, “wine country charm continues to help these races have a small-town vibe while growing into a full-blown trail festival weekend, with stunning vistas, relentless single track and in 2023 hopefully camping for participants.” (Endurance Sportswire)
