Here are the top 3 stories today in Healdsburg:
- Finally, some more details on this year's Fourth of July fireworks show in Healdsburg! The fireworks will start at dark around 10 p.m. and last 20 to 30 minutes, city officials say, with a "test shot approximately one hour before the show to check conditions." And here's the latest on where to watch: "Due to the size of this year’s show and to ensure spectator safety, viewing at the High School sports fields will not be available this year. Viewing will be available at the Fitch Mountain Elementary School Campus, on the west side of the High School in the parking lot area, and throughout other points in the City. Most of the fireworks will be visible 200 feet in the air and higher so look for places that provide a good view of the sky above the High School." There will be no street closures, officials say. And as for fire danger: "The Healdsburg Fire Department has been working closely with the Fireworks Operator on planning for this year’s show and will be monitoring weather conditions right up until the start of the show. If weather conditions are not favorable, the show will be rescheduled or cancelled." I'll keep you updated with any other details as they're released! (City of Healdsburg via Facebook)
- Beleaguered Healdsburg logger Ken Bareilles is facing big fines from local water quality officials if he fails to clean up his "troubled logging site in the Felta Creek watershed near Healdsburg," the Press Democrat reports in their latest installment of an investigative series on the logger. He has reportedly "been hit with repeated environmental violations over the past year," and now "faces potential fines of up to $10,000 a day if he fails to follow through on the orders, which require long-term restoration and monitoring of the disrupted landscape." More from the story: "The new Cleanup and Abatement Order is still in draft form and won’t be finalized until at least July 23. Bareilles first has 30 days to submit written comments that could contribute to refinement of the final order. But the record of post-fire salvage logging on the 106 acres at issue suggests Bareilles has little room to fight the strict demands that he stabilize hillsides, roads and trails and otherwise take action to prevent future rainfall from washing sediment into Felta Creek. The creek is a last refuge for endangered coho salmon and threatened steelhead trout." Click through for more info on the specific stuff he's allegedly done at the site. (Press Democrat; paywall)
- Sonoma County government officials say kids entering elementary school across the county are less and less "ready for kindergarten" — a trend that has gotten worse over the past five years in a row. A new county report finds that only around 32 percent of Sonoma County kids were considered ready for kindergarten when they started last fall. That number appears to be even lower in Healdsburg, at 30 percent. The report also found "persistent and troubling disparities along ethnic, racial and economic lines. "Research shows that readiness for kindergarten lays the foundation for long-term school success," the county says. "Positive factors that contribute to readiness include access to quality early child care and education, early literacy activities such as reading, singing and playing at home, and opportunities that help children heal from early trauma. Barriers to school readiness include poverty, lack of access to learning environments that reflect diverse students’ culture and language, the high cost of quality child care, and lack of internet access." In response, Healdsburg's county supervisor, James Gore, says the new study "shows us where resources are lacking for families and where we can do better as a community" — and that "we need to support families to make sure each child is ready to succeed in kindergarten and beyond.” You can read the full study here.
