What's New On Netflix: December 2021

Netflix land is beaming with boundless joy and excitement, thanks to the streaming platform’s slate of highly anticipated new releases that are sure to bring us all some holiday cheer — and a fantastic way to end 2021 with a big bang!

December brings the streaming debut of films that are already generating Oscar buzz. Among them: “Don’t Look Up,” Adam McKay’s climate change satire starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Ariana Grande, Cate Blanchett, Tyler Perry and other Hollywood A-listers.

Another Oscar contender making its way to the streaming service this month is “The Lost Daughter,” Maggie Gyllenhaal’s feature directorial debut, starring Olivia Coleman as a woman with a haunting past. Jane Campion’s Western drama, “The Power of the Dog,” is also being tipped for an Oscar; Benedict Cumberbatch plays a domineering rancher.

Netflix also welcomes the arrival of the original film “The Unforgivable.” The Nora Fingscheidt crime drama, based on the 2009 British drama “Unforgiven,” stars Sandra Bullock as a woman desperately trying to rebuild her life after being released from prison.

In coming weeks, get excited for the return of long-awaited TV shows, including the wildly imaginative “The Witcher,” the popular sci-fi “Lost in Space,” the martial arts dramedy “Cobra Kai” and the romantic comedy “Emily in Paris.”

A number of movie gems will also be available for your viewing pleasure, including “Minority Report,” “The Mask of Zorro,” “Closer,” “Chocolat,” “Looper” and “Darkest Hour.”

In the mood for a festive flick? Christmas titles with holiday glee include “The Great British Baking Show,” “A California Christmas: City Lights,” "Shaun the Sheep: The Flight Before Christmas” and “Single All the Way.”

Finally, if you are a fan of South Korean dramas, you can check out “The Silent Sea,” a sci-fi series being hailed as the next “Squid Game.”
