Man Strikes Cop During Arrest, Officer Responds With Taser

Incident took place during Mountain View's heightened driving under the influence effort Saturday.

A Mountain View police officer tasered a man who allegedly became combative during an arrest, the department reported Wednesday.

The Mountain View resident, 22-year-old Tyler J. Goncalves, allegedly ran a stop sign and was pulled over by an officer near the corner of Dana and Bryant Street at 1:20 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 30.

According to Mountain View Police Department spokesman Sgt. Sean Thompson, the officer observed systems of alcohol intoxicaton and so conducted a field sobriety exercise.

Thompson stated that the officer believed Goncalves was driving under the influence and began to arrest him, when the suspect allegedly became "combative."

"During the altercation the officer was struck in the face," Thompson said. "A taser was used."

Several police units swiftly responded to the incident, since the patrols were already downtown for the "Avoid the 13" heightened enforcement to combat driving while under the influence. A DUI checkpoint had been set up at 300 Moffett Boulevard.

Goncalves was booked for driving under the influence, battery against a Peace Officer, and resistance, delaying and obstructing a Peace Officer in the performance of his duty
