VW Bug Caught Fire in Old Mountain View Thursday

Patch reader and Facebook fan Valerie Harris snaps this photo after firefighters extinguish the flames.

For fans of the original Volkswagen Beetles, or "Bugs" as they are affectionally called, this is sad news.

On Thursday, Jan. 31 around 1:30 p.m., a resident, who lives near Church and View Streets, alerted the Mountain View Fire Department that his iconic car was smoking after a passerby informed him of the fact, according to department spokeswoman Jaime Garrett.

Firefighters arrived on scene and extinguished the fire. "Damage was limited to the car and didn't extend to any surrounding property," Garrett said.

Volkswagen closed it's last Bug manufacturing plant, located in Mexico City, in 2003, but in the United States they were already hard to find—the last Bug was sold in 1980, according to CNN Money.
