Sinkhole That Closed 6 Miles of Road Near San Jacinto Repaired

A stretch of Gilman Springs Road between San Jacinto and Moreno Valley had been closed since Tuesday due to a car-sized sinkhole.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA -- A six-mile stretch of Gilman Springs Road between San Jacinto and Moreno Valley that had been closed since Tuesday due to a car-sized sinkhole reopened today after the hole was patched up.

According to the Riverside County Department of Transportation, animal burrowing may have been responsible for damaging the roadway surface just north of Bridge Street.

A contractor was hired to make emergency repairs, which were completed about 10 p.m. Wednesday.

The massive hole appeared just after midnight Tuesday on the eastbound side of Gilman Springs, according to the California Highway Patrol, which immediately closed both sides of the two-lane road from Alessandro Boulevard in Moreno Valley to state Route 79 near San Jacinto.

Although several motorists reportedly narrowly missed driving into the recess, no injuries were reported.
