Burglar Caught After Pursuit From American Canyon To Vallejo: PD

A Vallejo man is accused of breaking into cars at a local hotel, then leading cops on a 100-mph pursuit, police said.

AMERICAN CANYON, CA — American Canyon police arrested a Vallejo man on suspicion of burglarizing three vehicles in the parking lot of a hotel and then leading officers on a pursuit before crashing on Monday night.

Officers responding to a suspicious person looking into cars with a flashlight tried to contact Charles Johnson, 25, who was in a green SUV in the parking lot of the Fairfield Inn and Suites at 3800 Broadway around 11:15 p.m.

Johnson allegedly accelerated away from the officers, forcing one officer to jump out of the way to avoid being struck, police said.

Officers followed the SUV for approximately 4 miles toward Vallejo as Johnson drove more than 100 mph, ran red lights and crashed into a fence on Tuolumne Street in Vallejo, police said.

Johnson ran from the SUV with officers and a police dog in pursuit, but he stopped to avoid being bitten by the police dog, police said.

He was taken into custody in front of a residence on Almond Street.

Johnson was in possession of burglary tools, including a punch device, and he is currently on probation in Sacramento for theft and other charges, police said. Johnson also was out on bail for charges in San Mateo County.

He was booked into Napa County Jail on suspicion of vehicle burglary, evading arrest, assault on an officer with a vehicle, committing a felony while out on bail, a probation violation and possession of burglary tools, police said.
