NAPA VALLEY, CA — Napa, Sonoma, and large swaths of Marin County under flood advisories or warning as a result of the storms hitting the Bay Area today.

Parts of Napa County is under a flash flood warning extended several times today as rain pelted residents.

The National Weather Service issued an alert shortly after 3 p.m. that heavy rain was falling over the Pickett Burn Area, just east of Calistoga.

The expected rainfall rate was half an inch to 1 inch in an hour.

"Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly," National Weather Service officials wrote.
Officials advised residents to move away from recently burned areas.

Life-threatening flooding of creeks, and roads is likely, the service reported. The heavy rains will likely trigger rockslides, mudslides, and debris flows in steep terrain. Impacted areas include

  • Pickett Road
  • Dutch Henry Canyon Road
  • Swartz Creek Bridge at Athena Springs Road
  • Pond Outlet near Pope Valley Road
  • Duvall Lake Outlet

American Canyon is under a flood advisory.

Sonoma and Marin

The weather service also issued a flood advisory for parts of Sonoma and Marin counties.

Officials warned residents to expect minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas and to watch out for water over roadways.

Up to an inch of rain has fallen since storms began today. Another inch of rainfall is expected to result in minor flooding.

  • Tamalpais-Homestead Valley
  • Muir Beach
  • Ross
  • Belvedere
  • Black Point-Green Point
  • Strawberry
  • Santa Venetia

Rain showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue into the night, but the thunderstorm threat will drop, according to the weather service. However, a much colder air mass will filter into the region.

Anyone observing flooding and can do so safety should report conditions to local emergency services or law enforcement and request they pass this information to the National Weather Service.
