BAY AREA, CA —Northern California residents have lived through some harrowing wildfires. This week, their neighbors to the south in the Los Angeles region are dealing with at least four explosive fires fanned by hurricane-force Santa Ana winds causing injuries and loss of life and property.

Conditions worsened overnight as gusts in the San Gabriel Mountains and foothills reached 60-100 mph.

Some 100,000 residents were evacuated from wildfires in the Altadena area Wednesday. All of La Cañada Flintridge was under evacuation orders, along with parts of Altadena, Sierra Madre, Pasadena and Monrovia. Authorities urged the public to heed evacuation orders because residents and first responders were trapped by the fast-moving fire, sometimes having to shelter in their cars as the inferno rages nearby.
