NAPA, CA — A San Francisco man convicted of kidnapping a woman from Napa and raping her was sentenced this week to more than 12 years in California state prison, Napa County District Attorney Allison Haley announced.

Efrain Jose Obando, 26, pleaded no contest to kidnapping, forcible oral copulation, and forcible rape — all strike felonies — in connection with crimes he carried out Jan. 27, 2024.

That morning, Obando drove to the victim's Napa workplace and forced her into his vehicle shortly after she arrived at work. He then drove her to a public storage facility in South San Francisco, where he tried to rape her. The woman managed to de-escalate the situation and convince Obando that she needed to get back to work in Napa.

According to the DA's Office, Obando agreed to drive the victim back to Napa but stopped in Vallejo, where he sexually assaulted her for several minutes before letting her go.

In addition to his no-contest pleas, Obando admitted to multiple special allegations, including that the offenses involved sophisticated planning.

Under a plea agreement, Obando must serve 12 years and eight months in prison. He must also register as a sex offender for life, adhere to a 10-year protective order to stay away from the victim and her daughter, and pay restitution to the victim as well as court fees.

"Today’s sentence ensures that Mr. Obando is held accountable for these horrific crimes and the pain he inflicted," said Deputy District Attorney Kristen Orlando, who prosecuted the case. "No one should endure what this survivor went through, and I commend her bravery for coming forward. Our community is safer because of her courage, and we will continue to stand with victims and fight for justice."
