North Bay Law Enforcement Touts 'Active Shooter' Training

In the wake of the Newtown, Conn. school shooting, local and national law enforcement are producing materials on what is being called "active shooter training."

Concurrent with a Department of Homeland Security video on "active shooter training," Healdsburg Police Chief Kevin Burke has produced a brochure called "Community Response to Active Shooter."

"The department was approached by a concerned citizen about what people could do if they encountered an active shooter situation," Lt. Matt Jenkins told Patch.

The Healdsburg Police brochure is available at the police station at 238 Center St., and is attached as a PDF with this article.

In addition, it will be on the department's website and at community events attended by the police.

The advice in the brochure and on the video is encapsulated in the theme "Run, Hide, Fight."

People are urged to run to a safe location, hide behind something that could protect them from bullets, lock doors, turn off lights and cell phone ringers, call for help, and, if all else fails, join with others to fight the aggressor if that person approaches and there's no other way to stay protected.
