📰 News we're reading

1. North Bay counties have seen some of highest home insurance rate increases in past decade (pressdemocrat.com) — Napa County homeowners are paying a 2024 median of $1,851 a year for home insurance, about 30% higher than a decade ago and above the statewide median. Researchers link rising premiums in Napa and neighboring fire-scarred counties to escalating wildfire risk and a strained insurance market, while consumer advocates outline mitigation steps, shopping strategies, and policy changes that may restore availability but not affordability.

2. Providence announces March closure date for Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital pediatric unit (pressdemocrat.com) — Napa residents should know that Providence, which runs Queen of the Valley Medical Center, is closing the inpatient pediatric unit at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital on March 27, 2026, and shifting that space to adult care. Local pediatricians and health advisors warn this will force many low-income children to seek nonemergency hospital stays outside Sonoma County, raising concerns about access, transfers, and long ER waits.

3. Wine Spectator's Top 100 Belongs to Napa and Sonoma Counties (patch.com) — Napa Valley wines are dominating Wine Spectator’s 2025 Top 100 list, with Napa and neighboring Sonoma counties claiming most of California’s 24 spots. Local producers, including Calistoga’s Aubert, earned top rankings for standout whites, underscoring Napa’s continued global influence and giving residents bragging rights—and a handy guide—when choosing bottles for their tables.

4. Prolific Prep flexes muscle at City of Palms after relocating to Florida (naplesnews.com) — Napa hoops fans may notice that Prolific Prep, long based at Napa Christian Academy, is thriving in its first season after relocating from Napa to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The powerhouse program has opened 10-1 behind stars Nasir Anderson, Caleb Holt, and Bruce Branch III, who just combined for 58 points at the City of Palms Classic. Coaches say the East Coast move improves travel and recruiting while preserving the program’s scholastic model.
