Rope Rescue Recovers Driver Trapped 100 Feet Off Cliff

A person who was trapped in their vehicle after it went off state Highway 121 in Napa County was safely rescued in a joint agency operation.

NAPA, CA — A person who was trapped in their vehicle after it went off state Highway 121 in Napa County Friday night was safely rescued in a joint agency operation.

Crews from Cal Fire's Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit and the Napa County Fire Department responded to the call about the trapped driver, who was stranded off the highway--which is Monticello Road in the area--near the Circle Oaks area, about 5 miles northeast of the city of Napa.

Rope rescuers from the Napa Interagency Rescue Team (NIRT) were called to the scene to use what Cal Fire termed "low angle rope rescue operations" to bring the driver up the slope.

The driver was safely brought back to the road level and brought to a hospital via an American Medical Response ambulance, according to Cal Fire.

The Napa Interagency Rescue Team draws personnel from each fire department in the county and provides specialized training and techniques for rope rescues.
