5 Things You Need to Know Today

Rain, water main, politics, graffiti and more.

Welcome to "5 Things You Need to Know Today," a new Patch column where we give the readers essential information at a glance. Check back often  for more, and let us know what you think of the new feature in the comments.

  1. Expect 1-to-2 inches of rain in the western San Fernando Valley by nightfall.  So drive carefully, but don't drive down Topanga Canyon Boulevard.  A water main break near Sherman Way has turned the street into a lake.
  2. If you've got to get your political fix, Bob Blumenfield, incumbent assemblyman from the 40th District, and Ferial Masry, candidate for the 37th Assembly District, will appear at a forum, 7 p.m., at Chaminade Preparatory High School, 23260 Saticoy St.
  3. For seniors 60 and older, there's a daily hot lunch program at St. Stephen Presbyterian Church, 20121 Devonshire St., at the corner of Winnetka. Be sure to arrive before 11:30 a.m., or there may not be a seat for you.  A donation of $1.25 is requested.
  4. They're going to elect three new board members to the Chatsworth Neighborhood Council tonight.  Be at Lawrence Middle School, 10100 Variel St., at 7 p.m. to participate in grass-roots democracy.
  5. Fed up with graffiti?  Call the West Valley Alliance at 818-885-8885.  They'll get rid of it for free.  But you'll probably have to wait until the rain lets up.
