NORTHRIDGE-CHATSWORTH, CA — The California State University, Northridge women's basketball squad cancelled two games because of the program's COVID-19 protocols, the university announced Tuesday.

The squad cancelled a game against the University of California, Irvine scheduled for Thursday and a game against UC San Diego scheduled for Saturday. Both games will be ruled no contest and rescheduled, the university said.

The Big West's board of directors made a policy change on Dec. 22 to declare any canceled games as no contest rather than a forfeit. Big West is the NCAA Division 1 grouping that CSUN competes in, along with 10 other California schools.

The seeding for the 2022 championships will not include number of games played as long as teams have met the NCAA 25 game minimum, according to The Big West news release. This 25 game minimum may be lowered as well.

"This fall, we successfully welcomed back our student-athletes and fans for competition in The Big West," said chair of the Big West board of directors Fram Virjee in a news release. "However, the risks to public health from COVID-19, and particularly the new omicron variant coupled with delta, remain an ever-present concern as we continue to make progress against this virus. Altering the policies surrounding schedule adjustments will allow programs to better respond to any issues that might arise during the season of competition, keeping the health of our student-athletes and our communities at large a top priority."
