LAPD Steps Up Public Transit Patrols After Netherlands Shootings

Greater attention is being given to public transportation in LA following an incident where three people were killed on a Dutch tram.

LOS ANGELES -- Police stepped up patrols of public transportation on Monday after a gunman shot and killed three people on a tram in the Dutch city of Utrecht.

``We've been monitoring the deadly tram shooting in Utrecht, Netherlands & communicating with law enforcement partners. At this time there's no nexus to LA but out of an abundance of caution you'll see a very visible presence on the transit system. Thoughts & prayers with Utrecht,'' the Los Angeles Police Department tweeted Monday afternoon.

Authorities in the Netherlands said 37-year-old Gokmen Tanis, a Turkish national who had previous run-ins with law enforcement, was arrested on Monday in the shooting, which happened about 10:45 a.m. local time (2:45 am Los Angeles time).
