Thunder, Hail Possible As Cold Storm Moves Into Chatsworth-Northridge

Snow in the mountains, waterspouts off the coast and some May lightning and thunder are anticipated as a cold storm moves into Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES, CA — An unseasonably cold storm is expected to drop snow levels to as low a 3,500 feet while bringing a chance of hail, thunder and waterspouts to the Los Angeles region Wednesday and Thursday, the National Weather Service warned.

Los Angeles County coasts and valleys can expect about a half-inch of rain while the foothills may get more than an inch of rain.

"We are still looking at a big change in the weather this week, with a storm system bringing rain & mountain snow Tue-Thu," the NWS' Los Angeles office tweeted Sunday afternoon, adding a third to an inch of rain and between 4 and 8 inches of snow above 5,000 feet are expected.

As of Tuesday, the weather service predicted a 20 percent chance that snow would dust the Tejon Pass.

Throughout the day Tuesday, the slow-moving storm was lingering to the north of Los Angeles, but the National Weather Service expects light rain to move in overnight with the bulk of precipitation falling Wednesday through Thursday.

Across much of Los Angeles, temperatures are expected to be as much as 10-20 degrees below normal. Overnight lows are expected to drop to the low 50s, and daytime highs are expected to linger in the low-to mid 60s through the end of the week, according to the National Weather Service.
