Alleged Baseball-Bat Assault Leads To Gaslamp SWAT Standoff
The suspect locked himself in his residence at Island and Second avenues, according to the San Diego Police Department.
SAN DIEGO, CA — A man suspected of assaulting a neighbor with a baseball bat last week holed up in his Gaslamp-area apartment Tuesday when police tried to question him, leading to a daylong standoff that ended in his arrest.
The suspect locked himself in his residence at Island and Second avenues at about 7:30 a.m. as officers were attempting to contact him, according to the San Diego Police Department.
After the man refused repeated orders to give himself up, a SWAT team was called in, SDPD Officer Colin Steinbroner said.

The standoff continued until about 4:15 p.m., when the special-weapons- and-tactics personnel forced entry to the suspect's home, deployed tear gas and took him into custody, the police spokesman said.
The alleged assault that led to the arrest of the man -- whose name remained unavailable as of early Tuesday evening -- took place Friday, according to Steinbroner.
